We were about a half mile to Marvin’s apartment when he drove past us in a beat up truck heading the opposite way.

“Did you just see that?” I asked.

Instead of answering, Zane made a U-turn in the middle of the road and followed after Marvin.

“I’m going to hang back a little,” Zane said. “I don’t want it to be obvious we’re following him.”

I snorted. “You have an Aston Martin. It’s not like we can hide in this car.”

He flashed me a grin, downshifted, and turned left at the intersection.

“Do you know where he’s going?” I asked.

“No clue.”

Marvin made a couple more turns before pulling into a driveway on the east side of town. As Zane rolled to a stop on the opposite side of the street three doors down, we watched as Marvin got out, smoothed back his hair and clothes, then jogged to the front door.

The door opened, and Marvin stepped inside.

Zane punched a few keys on his phone. “It’s Allison Knudsen’s place.”

I blinked in surprise. “The ex-fiancée? The one we saw him arguing with last night at the festival?”

“Looks that way.” He opened his door. “Let’s find out what they’re up to.”

We crossed the street, nodded to a couple kids riding bikes, then strode up the walkway. Zane knocked on the door, then rang the bell.

“Can I help you?” A petite young woman with shoulder-length dark hair stared out at us with large brown eyes.

“Allison Knudsen?” Zane asked.

“Yes.”

“My name is Detective Zane, and this is my partner, Detective Hilder. We’d like to come in and have a word with Marvin Pritchett.”

“Oh.” The woman looked over her shoulder to the room behind her. “Um…I guess it’s okay.”

She opened the door wider and stepped back, allowing us to come inside. The small entranceway opened to a living room that could double as a jungle. Myriad potted plants sat in stands, with even more plants hanging from the ceiling and walls.

“Who was at the door, Allison?” Marvin asked, entering the living room from the kitchen.

He stopped when he saw us. “What’re you doing here?”

“We came to ask you some questions,” I said.

“Why? About what?” he demanded.

“About why you lied to us,” I said. “You told us you weren’t at the festival, but we have proof you were. Care to explain?”

“Let’s sit down,” Allison said. “Calm down and just talk.”

Zane and I stepped down into the living room and sat on the couch, while Allison and Marvin sat side-by-side on a chaise lounge.

“I didn’t exactly lie,” Marvin said.

“You did.” I pulled out the photograph of Marvin and Allison arguing and handed it to him. “You told us you didn’t attend the festival, and that you stayed in your apartment.”

“Damn Cupid Cam,” Marvin muttered. “Okay, I only lied about attending the festival. I didn’t lie when I said I was nowhere near the Ferris wheel. That was the truth. I never went down to the end of the boardwalk.”

“So why did you lie?” I asked. “And why were you arguing with Allison?”

“I went to the festival to talk to Allison.
